audiobooks

Below are a selection of my favourite audiobooks. I like to listen when I’m cooking or pottering; it’s an excellent way to digest information.

I haven’t ventured into fiction yet, but I’m enjoying using Audible as part of my learning and development process.

I don’t tend to finish the books that I’m not getting along so you can consider this list doubly recommended as often I’ve listened twice – especially when I’m writing a blog.

Schopenhauer-Philosophy-in-an-Hour

Schopenhauer: Philosophy In An Hour

This series of philosophy books are a wonderfully digestible way to get an introduction to a subject. Schopenhauer, the great German Philosopher, wrote a satirical essay, The Art Of Always being right, that I used in my blog – The Art Of Being Wrong.

Spinoza

Spinoza: Philosophy In An Hour

Part of the same series, this audiobook was a great introduction to the works of the Dutch Philosopher Baruch Spinoza and is told with excellent drama – I especially love the telling of Spinoza’s ex-communication ceremony.

Brief-Answers-to-the-Big-Questions

Brief Answers To The Big Questions – Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking was such a colossal loss to the world. In this audiobook, narrated by Ben Whishaw, he discusses science and his own stories and adventures. The book covers the importance of creativity and the power of the right teacher to make a mark. He laments the loss of funding for education, and while noting worries for the future, he still gives us hope for coming together. One of his lifelong missions was to bring science into the lives of ordinary people like me and to drive curiosity. He succeeds – highly recommended.

Indistractable

Indestractible: How To Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life – Nir Eyal

While it is undoubtedly easy to overdose on productivity and distraction books, I highly recommend this one. It comes with a user-friendly workbook to set out your goals, and I love his starting point in the indestructible journey, which defines your ideal week. Highly recommended, and I look forward to my next Nir Eyal book.

Mindset-Updated-Edition

Mindset - Dr Carol Dweck

What can I say about this that hasn’t already been written? Highly recommended, and if you’re ever in need of a motivational boost, this will do it for you. It contains hours of stories and theory to bring you into the growth mindset and dash any ideas about fixed capabilities onto the ground.

Blue-Ocean-Strategy

Blue Ocean Strategy: How To Create Uncontested Market Space and Make the Competition Irrelevant

While this is a long read, it is the best book I’ve read to date on business strategy. Stories are supplemented with detailed descriptions of the theory and practice. If traditional business strategy feels overwhelming or it doesn’t inspire you, then for sure, check out this book; it’s a worthwhile read.
